Welcome to the Constellation Quilt Along.
For me, it all started with constellation and glow-in-the-dark Fairy Frost fabric, and the need to create some wonky star samples for my UNM Continuing Education quilting class.
You might wonder why I would have such a thing as glow-in-the-dark fabric on hand, not to mention the glow-in-the-dark thread.
Aside from a sale on Halloween fabric a while back, night time illumination takes me back to my childhood--one enlightened by these adorable critters.
But I digress. Let's focus on the quilt, rather than my barely-surpressed campaign to bring back Glo Friends.
My son greatly enjoys heading to the back yard at night with his daddy, the iPad, and a constellation ap. Seriously, whatever happened to Glo Friends being good enough? Kids these days...
Anyhow, I decided to combine wonky stars and an alternate grid layout to create a Leo quilt, since it's my son's favorite constellation.

Since this quilt was designed for a four year old, it is toddler bed size, 61" x 38".
If you'd like to join along, you will need:
3 yards of background fabric
1/4 yard of star fabric
2 yards of backing
1/2 yard of binding

Yay for glow in the dark! I had glow in the dark stars arrange in constellation patterns on my ceiling as a child. I probably won't sew along, but I will definitely be following along. :)
ReplyDeleteWhat a lovely idea. I have them on my ceiling and walls. Your quilt will 'shine on' for years to come!
ReplyDeleteI tested out the glow effect. It works quite nicely, and I do hope it lasts. Thankfully, I don't think there's a shelf life on whatever makes glow-in-the-dark do its thing.
DeleteYour son is going to be 'over the moon' to have a quilt that depicts his favourite constellation AND glows in the dark! What a great concept! Can't wait to see how you end up quilting this!
ReplyDeleteHe's a little stinker; he told me there weren't enough stars to distinguish Leo. However, that hasn't kept him from demanding a pretty strict time line for completion. Come on back to see how I decided to quilt this. It's really simple, but suitable to the theme.
DeleteI had no idea glow in the dark thread existed! I can't wait to see how that turns out. I love the idea for this quilt! Maybe I could squeeze in making a mini this month...
ReplyDeleteWith your elaborate quilting, that mini would surely glow splendidly. The thread fought me at first, but it worked out when I matched the weight of thread in the bobbin with the weight of the glow-in-the-dark thread.
DeleteOooh that is a fun idea! If you see it on sale again, let me know!
DeleteI'd completely forgotten that gloworms existed! I think I might have had one...
ReplyDeleteI saw glow in the dark thread at a quilt shop, they actually had several different colours!
More colors? Now you tell me...Just kidding. Those bugs are getting to be worth quite a bit on eBay. New in the package, they're going for $50 each! I suppose I'm not the only one bringing back a piece of their childhood.
DeleteStopping by from Lets BEE Social. I want be playing along but I am sure I will see your process..
ReplyDeleteThat is a SUPER idea! I love the way you have adapted the constellation into the quilt! I too love to go out with the ipad and use the SkyView app to work out what everything is up there in the sky, hadn't thought to make any of it into a quilt! Great work!
ReplyDeleteThank you. Next time we head outside with the iPad, I'll be thinking of you. I do have an uncanny ability to turn everything into a quilting project. Obsession at its finest.
DeleteLovely quilt and great idea using the glow in the dark fabric and thread (I didn't even know that they existed, I am a new quilter :))
ReplyDeleteAnd thanks for linking up on my blog!! :)
Thank you. It's coming in handy as my son isn't as intent on having the hall light on and his door open a crack, since the stars glow better when it's darker.
ReplyDeleteOh, I remember the Glo worms! I had forgotten about them until I saw your post. Your quilt is a lovely idea. My husband and sons love looking at the stars and the constellation apps on the iPad too.
