March Bee Blocks

My bee blocks this month were fun, fun, fun! Michelle Willkie over at Factotum of Arts has a brilliant plan for the March Stash Bee Hive #3 blocks, which she calls Through the Looking Glass. Her inspiration came from the idea of looking through a magnifying glass. Then, she further evolved the concept by choosing improv blocks to represent the affect of the glass being shattered.

Her clever idea gave me "wishing I had thought of that" design envy. Perhaps that's why I was sorely tempted to keep ahold of her blocks when I finished making them.

She requested blocks in green, blue, or a combination of red, orange, and yellow. Can you tell I had trouble deciding? I was so immersed in making these blocks that my husband popped into the sewing room to remind me to have lunch, and I'm not the kind of gal to go without food for long. Or it gets ugly. Come to think of it, I suppose that may have motivated my husband's courteous reminder. When making these blocks, you have to be careful to maintain a consistent 1/4" seam and press, rather than iron, or the tiny 1/4" white strips can get wavy.

Christine chose wonky pinwheels in scrappy green and blue with a light gray background. We used the tutorial on the Greenleaf Goods website. It worked well to press the seams open. It didn't work so well to mark the lines with a Frixion pen. Mark-Sew-Press-Disapper-Regret-Mark Again. I also had to make sure that the squares were rotated correctly, with two points and two wider sides in each center.
