Seas The Day Quilt

My friend Jess is expecting a baby girl shortly, so I made a quilt to commemorate the occasion. I was thrilled when she let me know her chosen nursery colors: peach, mint, off-white, and gray. These are some of my personal favorites!
This is my little guy, Cade, and I think he approves!
The pattern is Seas the Day from Fat Quarter Shop's The Jolly Bar Book. To see more about the piecing of this quilt, check out my original post.

My fabric selection included Littlest by Art Gallery Fabrics along with a minty green solid and peach Pearl Bracelets. All of the quilting was done using Mint Aurifil 50 wt #2830.
I grouped background sections together into hexagons before using a ruler foot and an Add-A-Quarter Ruler to add a geometric design.
I found my chosen design, Fractured Squares, in The Ultimate Guide to Machine Quilting.

Here's how I approached placing the design in each hexagon:
Lay a ruler as shown by the dotted lines. First mark the middle of the hexagon. Then measure 1" and 2" from the top point of each triangle.
Beginning at the farthest end, go to the nearest corner and then the center point. Head back toward the 1" mark, followed by the starting point. Then, go back to the center point via the 2" mark.

Make another forward, backward, and forward pass in the next triangular section.
Complete the third set of lines. Repeat with the other half of the hexagon in the same manner.
While ruler work is more prevalent for long arms, it's a newer phenomenon in the realm of domestic machines. If you are interested in exploring ruler work on a home machine, I recommend Craftsy's Quilting with Rulers on a Home Machine with Amy Johnson.
I quilted the squares with a feather in each quarter.

  6. your quilting looks really good. More than I would do for a baby quilt, but I see that it gives you a great place to practice, so maybe I'll have to change my outlook! :-) And your little guy is a doll!! So sweet: his smile made me smile! :-) Hugs, H

  7. Awesome! I love how you laid out how to do that design. I follow Amy on YouTube and always love it when a new video pops up. Great quilting, but then I'm not surprised as you do so many things in an excellent way.

  9. I love this so so much. I love the bunnies especially and that it isn't just your traditional pink/purple quilt for a girl. :)
