I'll show you a little bit about the steps my Craftsy pattern covers in greater detail. 

You'll need at least two fabrics: a background and something other than background. I used Moda's Elementary by Sweetwater, Robet Kaufman's Science Fair Formulas, Pearl Bracelets by Lizzy House,  and Sketch to name a few. 

For each 5" block, you are going to need two 3" squares cut from the background fabric. From the other fabric, cut two 2" squares and two 3" squares. Draw a diagonal line from corner to corner on each 2" square. 

Place a 2" square in one corner of each of the background squares, with right sides together. The diagonal line should extend from one raw edge to the other. Stitch on the line. 

Press the smaller square toward the corner.

Fold the smaller square back open, and cut 1/4" from the sewn line, leaving a 1/4" seam.

Lay out your blocks as shown, being careful to align directional fabrics correctly.

Fold the right side over onto the left side, so that right sides are together.

Sew these together using a 1/4" seam.

Press toward the non-pieced square.

Once your blocks look like this, stitch the two halves together.

Then your blocks are ready to be combined with each other. There are many layout possibilities, so keep rearranging until you decide which suits you best. You might also want to include sashing.
