DeleteMy scraps are only partly organized (by color) and even though I regularly use them to make small and large projects they seem to multiply! It's a common problem, I believe. They are too pretty to get rid of though!

ReplyDeleteMy scraps are sorted by shape- squares and rectangles. Anything that can't be made to fit one of those categories is put into the scrap pillow- basically a rectangular bag that I made out of extra blocks that is being filled with tiny scraps and cuttings. Once it is full, it is sewn shut and becomes a bolster pillow.

I put them into a basket as I sew and (in theory) sort that basket by color when it gets full. I keep the colored scraps with their larger cuts of the same color fabrics - I LOVE scrappy looking things so I find I use them more when I see everything at once!

I throw "left overs" from quilting and sewing projects into a bin and when I start another project I sort through the collection, looking for those I can use. I hope to some day switch to "pre cutting" the scraps into usable sizes and storing them that way. It will be much neater and easier to see what I have. I love my scrap bin!

I wait until they are taking over the corner of the quilt room and then I start sewing 'make-fabric' blocks or something else that requires very little cutting!
ReplyDeleteI did the rainbow scrap challenge this year and worked through a lot of scraps making a 1920s farmer's wife quilt. I am currently using some of my scraps in a leader and ender project that will be a baby quilt. :)
ReplyDeleteMy scraps are getting a bit out of hand but right now I have then separated by color in cloth bins on a bookshelf. A friend and I are planning on having a scrap-tastic quilting year in 2018 to get rid of our scrap but I don't know if my poor bins will last until then.

I sort them by color in those clear plastic boxes that salad comes in. Strips are all together in a basket. Everything I make is scrappy!

ReplyDeleteI keep all of my scraps in a large wire basket. They live and mingle well together and don't cause me any problems, so there they will stay. I shuffle through them often to get what I need, then leave them alone to get reacquainted.

ReplyDeleteI cut scraps as I cut my main project. I cut them into standard squares and strips (1.5, 2.5, 3.5 and 5) and store them by color. I also use a leaders and enders and have a good stash of 2.5 inch squared sewed to white squares.

Not sure if this will work or not... I am sewing strips together as leader and enders now so at least something is getting joined together now!

ReplyDeleteThis made me laugh mostly at myself. I don't deal with them they deal with me. I am a basic mess with scraps.
ReplyDeleteThe reasonably sized pieces are with the rest of my stash, the really small pieces are in a bag, and the unusable shreds are in another bag (to be used as stuffing for softies, etc.).

ReplyDeleteAfter getting tired of digging through scraps lumped together I have started cutting them down before I put them away. Leftovers are cut to the largest common denominator I sort by plastic shoe box, sweater box or whatever you need. Then I can just grab out of the right size box to make a quilt!!

ReplyDeleteI try to male 4 patch quilts and then I have given a lot of scraps away to my niece to help her get more interested in quilting. They pile up, I know. I am on FB a lot getting ideas, quilt patterns, inspiration and still more quilt patterns keep getting printed. You just have to either make up your mind to start using those scraps or give them away or just keep them around. ReplyDeleteI love scrappy quilts and have a few going at once, so I try to cut up my scraps into the needed sizes right away--though I have a basket on top of my sewing cabinet where they accumulate until I cut them up, as well as a bin for strings and another for selvages that are both overflowing at the moment!
ReplyDeleteI love my scraps and as much as I'd LIKE to be more organized, it never really seems to happen. I tend to sort and store them by color, but the tiniest bits are in a jar near my sewing table. I love to see all the colors and let them inspire my creativity as I work!

ReplyDeleteAnything that can be folded is folded and put back in my drawers. From the rest I cut 2" squares. The leftovers from that go into a box, and anything over 1/2" I use to make "made fabric" squares by color and sew those into baby quilts. sarah@forrussia.org

Oh gosh, I love Thimbleberries and Scraps! I've been saving my scraps as well as collecting them from others. I love EPP and using my scraps for that. Right now they are sorted by color but I want to cut them into different sizes as well, i.e., 2.5" sqs, 3" sqs and 5" sqs.
